Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that reflects natural variation in how people think, learn, and experience the world. Jacqui adopts a neurodiversity-affirming approach that recognises autism as part of human diversity, while also acknowledging that some individuals may benefit from understanding, environmental adjustments, and appropriate supports.
Autistic individuals may show differences in:
Social communication and interaction, such as understanding social expectations or building relationships.
Sensory processing, including heightened or reduced sensitivity to sound, light, touch, or movement.
Preference for predictability and routine, which can support emotional safety and regulation.
Focused interests and thinking styles, often associated with strengths such as creativity, persistence, and attention to detail.
You may consider seeking a comprehensive autism assessment if your child experiences ongoing differences that impact daily functioning across home, school, or community settings. These may include challenges with peer relationships, communication, flexibility with change, sensory sensitivities, emotional regulation, or highly focused patterns of interest or behaviour.
Assessment can provide clarity, validation, and a shared understanding of strengths and support needs, helping individuals and families advocate for appropriate supports. Where relevant, this information can also assist schools and community services to implement reasonable adjustments that promote participation and wellbeing.
