Educational Assessment (Academic Achievement Assessment)
Educational assessments are structured, evidence-based evaluations conducted to better understand young person’s academic skill development and learning profile. These assessments explore areas such as reading, written expression, spelling, mathematics, and aspects of oral language.
One commonly used standardised measure is the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test – Third Edition (for children aged 4+ years). This assessment provides detailed information about a student’s learning strengths as well as areas that may benefit from targeted teaching and support.
Educational Assessment findings can be used to:
inform individualised educational planning and goal setting
guide recommendations for evidence-based academic interventions
support collaborative planning between families, schools, and health professionals
assist with decisions regarding reasonable adjustments or additional supports
monitor learning progress over time
Assessment outcomes are considered alongside developmental history, clinical judgement, and information from parents and educators. They are not used in isolation to make educational or diagnostic decisions.
Parents or carers may find an educational assessment helpful when:
a child is experiencing ongoing or unexpected learning difficulties
there is a difference between a child’s observed abilities and academic performance
there is a difference between a child’s academic performance and that of their peers
schools recommend further assessment to guide programming or supports
families would like clearer information to assist with advocacy and educational planning
there is a need to evaluate the effectiveness of current interventions
A comprehensive understanding of a child’s learning profile can support strength-based planning, targeted intervention, and positive engagement with learning.
